Miami South Beach - Shoot for Athleisure

Its been a whirlwind of a summer and luckily I have the photos to prove it! (ha-ha) Yes being a photographer I always get a record of where I am and what I am seeing.  Loved the fact that I got to wear a bikini to work.  It was the end of July in South Beach Miami and I was SWEATING in the humidity so wearing the bare minimum of clothing was ideal.

I did protect my skin and wore sunblock but totally forgot to put it on my lower back and being hunched over all day in the sun I did get sunburned.  But taking these photos were worth it.

Super happy that Athleisure chose this story to be their cover photo..Yeah!! Here they are and a link to the online mag.

Festival of Color - Bringing Happiness to the Streets of Brooklyn!

Ever since I saw the Hindu spring festival,  Holi in a movie, I have been obsessed with experiencing it for myself.  Holi is an ancient Hindu religious festival that signifies the coming of spring.  The time where the end of the long winter months are behind us and everyone rejoices in the upcoming harvest.

Its a beautiful albeit messy holiday that has become popular with non-Hindu's around the world.  This fun loving celebration's characteristic is the colored powder that everyone throws on each other.  Everyone is fair game to be covered in colored powder, friends, strangers, rich, poor, young, old.  It's a time to laugh, forget, forgive, repair broken relationships and enjoy the warm months to come.

So having a lot on Johnson Ave in Bushwick Brooklyn turned into the Festival of Color with a sea of smiling happy colorful people dancing to music was the best way I could have spent my Saturday afternoon. More information on the festival here.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by and got your portrait taken and a HUGE thank you to undies.com for donating bras that even the blokes all wanted to wear.

The Joy Formidable and why live music is so much fun.

Welsh band The Joy Formidable brought their alternative rock to Irving Plaza, NYC in support of their record Hitch.  Awe inspiring to see Ritzy Bryan the female lead singer hit unapologetic rifts as the lead guitarist and rock the crowd.

Despite the ear shattering rock tearing throughout the set, Ritzy managed to quiet the crowd down and silence them to do an encore acoustic set in the middle of crowd. The well behaved crowd was so quiet you were able to hear the vocals and acoustic guitars throughout the entire venue without any mics or backline.

I always get so inspired by live music shows.  Stills more than video you are able to capture moments that embody the energy and excitement of the moment.

What a great band.  Check out more on Joy Formidable and their upcoming tours and shows here.

Final usage of photos - sizing & formats

You've spent the hours finding your photographer, shooting and now what do you do with all those photos?

Before you shoot you really need to think about the final usage of all the photos you take.  How are the photos going to be used?  What format are they going to be in?  The reason for thinking about his is you have to know how to compose the photos to fit the different common formats for photo usage.

For example for your facebook fan page you need a horizontal or landscape image that cuts out 2/3 of the height of most digital photo sizes.  That is a 3:1 ratio on the image.  If you have 5 band members you don't want one person's face not in the image.  You also need a profile image that is square or 1:1 ratio.

So to help the DIY musicians and solopreneurs, I have included a PDF of common final usage of photos with the formats and minimum sizes.

Any questions or comments please write them below and I will try and address some of them in future blog post.

Want more media love, bookings and increase fan following? Start with your image.

It’s actually the first thing an editor or promoter sees before they hit play to listen to your music.   Eye-catching and compelling visuals grabs your audience's attention and is the gateway to invite more fans and followers to listen to your music.

ADM's principal Becky Yee gave the presentation and is happy to share her photoshoot check list here.

Thank you to to everyone who came to the presentation and thank you to CD Baby for sponsoring the first DIY Musician Conference held at the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, IL.

Adam Levine Collection at NYFW

http://www.greyepk.com/blog/2015/10/13/grey_matter-at-nyfw-adam-levine-collection/

The music industry may be beyond repair, but that doesn’t stop top musicians from turning profit from their talent, style and looks.  Fashion and music go hand in hand.  Now one of People Magazine’s sexiest men alive, Adam Levine lends his effortless style and name to a collection that showed at New York Fashion Week for SS 2016 collection.

Although Adam Levine gives the final thumbs up, the collection is designed by Kevin Christiana, known for being a contestant on Project Runway season 4 and dressing music royalty such as Steven Tyler,  Lenny Kravitz and The New York Dolls.

The lifestyle collection boasts everyday basics with hints of cool details.  Take the collection’s button down collared shirts with the signature selvage tape detail at the chest pocket, adding just that needed touch of necessary hipness.

There were also cleaned up 90’s grunge style with plaids and manicured ripped denim jeans.  The women’s collection, although not as strong as the men’s collection, had it’s moments of “Wait, you can buy a white faux fur sleeveless vest with black trim at KMART?!”

The women’s collection is definitely Coachella ready-wear and with these prices you won’t mind getting dirty in the mud at any festival.  In fact the entire collection seems to be thinking about most indie musicians’ budgets, with shirts retailing for just under $15 and jeans in the $30 range.

The Adam Levine Collection is available exclusively at Kmart and Shop Your Way. It’s bringing a whole new clientele to the retailer.  People like Republic Recording artist Matt McAndrew were in attendance at the runway show (McAndrew was decked head to toe in the collection). He said he loves the printed shirts and tailored, but comfortable, fit of the jeans.  Matt, who was part of Team Adam on The Voice, treated the NYFW crowd to a few songs including his billboard hit “Wasted Love.”

Adam Levine was noticeably absent from the show being on tour in Europe with Maroon 5.  Miss Universe Paulina Vega and Real Housewives of Orange County.  It was Orange is the New Black actress Gina Naomi Baez and her dog, Tinkerbell who stole the red carpet paparazzi love.

ZZ Ward Live at Irving Plaza

NYFW is over and we got right to work shooting for Bands In Town, The super talented and lovely ZZ Ward charmed a full packed house at Irving Plaza, NYC in support of her new album, This Means War.

Her genre bending music seamlessly melded her powerful vocals with rock, R & B and Hip hop influences.  ZZ Ward is the sexiest harmonica player I have ever photographed (or ever seen really) and she played guitar, piano all in heels!  She even surprised the crowd by performing her last encore song next to her fans in the middle of the crowd.

Like so many songwriters past and present, ZZ Ward addresses themes of love and heartbreak but with a ferociousness not often seen.  Songs like "Move it like you stole it" has her demanding her love to urgently make some moves on her and "Til the casket drops" is how long she will love them.

But it was the "Put the gun down" featuring the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Freddie Gibbs where she states, "You have to fight for great love sometimes."

Check out more from ZZ Ward on her new album, THIS MEANS WAR, http://www.zzward.com/
